An excellent win for the Sunday XI, with performances all round. It was also great to match last year's winning tally with our second game of the season (note to Ken). We had a strong side, with batting depth and a number of bowling options. Garth took the gloves.
Del and DVD opened up and racked up the 100 partnership inside 14 overs, Del hitting some big shots (both ugly and proper) and DVD batting solidly. By drinks at 20 overs, the score was well past 130 and Dan generously retired on 51 having hit his second consecutive half century. Top effort! Ammar took a little while to get in, but Del continued his run-scoring with a coupleof huge 6s, one into cow corner and the other almost reaching the car park. He reached his maiden 100 for the club with a four, and then retired. Well done Del - much deserved. Simon P then came in and hit a career-best 31, copying the Ken shovel with some lusty blows to the leg-side. Mally and Ken completed the scoring with 17 and 5 not out respectively. 259 was exactly 100 more than we scored last week, and while we thought that 180 was a decent shout with the batting we had, 200+ was fantastic.
An excellent Tea supplied by Garth, and backed up with some solid left-overs from the Webster birthday party was consumed, and we gingerly resumed play half an hour later. Jacko and Ahsan opened up, and runs proved hard to come by. Gollum took over at the pavilion end, and soon trapped the opener LBW - well done Gollum! The Colonel wheeled away at the top end, and was unlucky not to get a wicket, but bowled well. A couple of very good run-outs followed, with a direct hit from Del and a great throw from Jacko to the keepers end to dismiss two batsmen who looked pretty decent players. Ken and Mally both took wickets in their overs, and then Jacko picked up one in his second spell to leave Gardeners 6 down at the end. Well done to everyone, it was a great team effort and everyone contributed.
Saturday XI v Botany Bay
Botany Bay 185/6 (40.0)
North Enfield 126/10 (30.0) T.Coughlan 29, Y.Ghays 24, R.White 24
Not a vintage performance against a strong Bay XI, but some positives to take on the bowling front with everyone who did bowl getting some overs in and restricting the Bay to under 200 was a decent effort. Batting starting promisingly and at 45/0 after 9 overs it looked like we had a good chance. Unfortunately a bit of a middle order collapse occured and we finished well short. Everyone tried their best and not to take anything away from that, but the fact that on Friday night at one stage we only had 8 players for a league-standard fixture one week before the league starts, should raise some alarm bells...
